Academic Search Engine Knobull Streamlines The Research Process

Trending...
BOSTON - BostonChron -- Lynn Bentley, President of Knobull announced, "Research skills are vital because they enable researcher to find information and create a report for their project—whether it's creative, business or academic research. By developing organized and successful research methods, you'll be able to become knowledgeable in any field that you need to research."

This may sound obvious, but it's very important to understand what your teacher, professor or manager is requesting before you start the research. Use the guidelines provided to help pick your research  topic. If you have a topic that you love, but you're having trouble fitting it into the guidelines, choose another topic.

Get comfortable reading through things quickly. Learn how to identify key points and arguments without getting bogged down and reading every word. To check out the sources on the article, use keywords from your Knobull search to explore academic databases. Work to understand all of the different viewpoints and schools of thought on your topic.

When the exploration is complete and results organized, develop a short thesis statement that you — as researcher — put forward for the readers of your report as what you are trying to explain or prove. After you have worked to create a specific, arguable, definitive thesis statement, this is another place that it could be helpful to check in with trusted advisers.

Creating an outline is really about structuring your report. Don't be too formulaic, but it can be helpful to follow patterns and guides. As you create an outline, think critically about what you are trying to explain or communicate and what structure allows you to do that in a clear, organized way.

When writing, don't be a perfectionist. You have done a lot of work already, so trust that and work from memory as you write your research report. It's okay to look up a specific quote or statistic, but in general your ideas should be your own at this point. If you use a specific finding, you need to cite your source and include more information about the quote on a Work Cited or References page.

Bentley concluded, "Edit your work to make it ready to present because it is now time to make your report as perfect as possibly. This means thinking about structure, organization, wording, and length. Look carefully at how you've worded your sentences. Did you communicate clearly? Can you make your report clearer or easier to understand? Once you have made all the changes you think necessary, read back through your report again to be sure it all makes sense.

Once you have reviewed your research report for a final time and double checked that the requirements have been met, it is time to submit and/or present."
