MONTREAL - BostonChron -- Arbutus Medical Inc., a medical device innovation company focused on streamlining surgical inefficiencies for the good of patient care, has announced the launch of a new product to streamline a common but inefficient orthopaedic hand surgery performed in hospital emergency rooms. Arbutus Medical will be debuting the innovation at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting in Montréal from October 23-25.
The new product, Digit Revision SwiftKit™, is a sterile-packed procedure kit to streamline revision amputations for fingertip and toe trauma. Digit Revision SwiftKit™ includes two innovative single-use instruments – QuikRev™ rongeur and QuikLift™ freer-elevator – both recyclable and purpose-built for the digital extremities, plus a complete convenience kit that helps staff win back time usually wasted on a scavenger hunt for supplies.
Digit Revision SwiftKit™ is expected to save orthopaedic/plastics hand trauma teams upwards of 30 minutes per procedure and will avoid the cost and delays associated with obtaining sterile instrument trays from operating room inventory. These gains can help hospitals increase patient throughput in the emergency department (ED), win back resources, and improve quality of care. The product is cleared for sale by the US FDA.

"We developed Digit Revision SwiftKit™ based on direct requests from surgeons at hospitals across the US," said Lawrence Buchan, Chief Executive Officer at Arbutus Medical, Inc. "Time and again, we heard surgeons explain that the revision amputation workflow was a nightmare causing delays in ED patient throughput and impacting patient care. It was clear that this is a simple yet impactful problem that really should not exist. SwiftKit™ solves that problem."
Digit Revision SwiftKit™ is Arbutus Medical's second procedure kit to streamline a simple orthopaedic trauma procedure commonly performed in the ED. The company's first procedure kit, TrakPak®, streamlines bedside skeletal traction. Arbutus Medical executed a full market release for TrakPak® in 2023 and the product has been adopted by over 55 hospitals.
To mitigate environmental footprint, the single-use QuikRev™ rongeur and QuikLift™ freer have been designed using a recyclable plant-based material derived from castor beans, which are sustainably farmed via the Pragati Initiative. Similar to the company's QuikBow® pin tensioner, a component of TrakPak®, hospitals will be able to recycle QuikRev™ and QuikLift™ via Arbutus Medical's BlueWave collection service.
Surgeons, Physician Assistants, Residents, and members of industry are encouraged to visit Arbutus Medical's booth (#540) at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Meeting in Montréal for a product demonstration.
