Boston: Anna Harris Smith Study Report

Trending...
~ Dorchester's 65 Pleasant Street is home to the historically significant Anna Harris Smith House, which holds significance at the local, state, and regional levels. The house is closely associated with the prominent Clapp family, particularly Anna Harris Smith, who was born in the house in 1843. Smith's grandfather, Samuel Clapp, built the house and she lived there until 1908.

Under Smith's leadership, the Animal Rescue League of Boston was founded and grew into a highly impactful institution. It served as a model for humane societies across the country and continues to serve communities throughout Eastern Massachusetts today.

Aside from its historical significance, the Smith House also holds architectural importance for the city of Boston. It is considered to be the best-preserved example of a five-bay by two-bay Federal-style vernacular house in Dorchester. Built in 1804 by Samuel Clapp, it is one of the oldest surviving houses in Boston.

The potential designation of the Smith House as a landmark would mean that any proposed changes to the property would be reviewed by the Commission according to specific Standards and Criteria outlined in a study report. This would ensure that the historic integrity of the landmark and its setting are protected. However, it should be noted that this designation would not regulate any use or alterations to interior features.

For those interested in providing feedback on this potential landmark designation, there are two options available. Written feedback can be submitted through a feedback form found on our website. Additionally, a public hearing will be held on June 24th, 2025 where members of the public are invited to attend and share their comments on the study report. The hearing notice will be posted on our website at least ten days prior to the hearing date.
