July 25, 2024 ~ Boston Public Schools (BPS) has been recognized for its commitment to clean energy and sustainable transportation solutions, winning the Green Fleet Award - Large Public Fleet Category at the 2024 Green Bus Summit. The award, presented by School Transportation News (STN) in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), celebrates school districts that have made exceptional efforts towards reducing their carbon footprint and promoting cleaner, healthier air for their communities.

The winners were announced on July 14 at the STN EXPO in Reno, Nevada, where BPS was praised for its outstanding leadership in adopting renewable energy sources. Out of their fleet of 750 buses, 20 operate on electricity and 480 run on propane, showcasing the district's dedication to sustainability.

Superintendent Mary Skipper expressed her pride in receiving this recognition and highlighted the district's goal of achieving a fully electric fleet by 2030. "This award is a testament to our city and district's commitment to sustainability and the health and well-being of our students and community," she said.

Dylan Cahill, an account executive at Safety Vision, also commended BPS for their efforts in promoting renewable fueling methods. "In the Northeast, no district has done more to promote green busing than Boston," he said.

Key figures in this achievement include Jackie Hayes, Deputy Director of Transportation, Alex Oster, Assistant Director of Contract Operations and Fleet, and Cian Fields, Electrification Manager. They have been instrumental in driving BPS's green initiatives forward and have partnered with organizations like the World Resources Institute (WRI) to navigate the complexities of transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Fields expressed his gratitude for receiving this prestigious award and emphasized the importance of collaboration among school districts. "It means so much to us," he said. "We've been working so hard - the City of Boston and Boston Public Schools. It's a validation to so many school districts out there that you can do this, take the first few buses to electric and go for it. Connect with other school districts, use coalitions, and talk to each other."

This recognition highlights BPS's ongoing dedication to environmental stewardship and its proactive approach to creating a healthier, more sustainable future for Boston's students and residents. The district's commitment to clean energy and sustainable transportation serves as an inspiration for other school districts to follow suit.
