~ Boston City Council Reaffirms Importance of Constitution and Checks and Balances
In the wake of the July 4, 2025 celebration, the Boston City Council has emphasized the city's significant role as the birthplace of the American Revolution. In a recent meeting, the Council reaffirmed the importance of upholding the Constitution and its system of checks and balances.
During the meeting, the Council highlighted the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780, which is recognized as the world's oldest functioning written constitution. This document served as an inspiration for the U.S. Constitution and introduced crucial elements such as separation of powers, checks and balances, an independent judiciary, and protections against government overreach.
The Council also referenced James Madison's warning against the concentration of power. Expressing concern over recent actions by President Trump and his administration, including ignoring court rulings and attempting to overturn birthright citizenship, restricting civil liberties, withholding funds, closing agencies, imposing tariffs unilaterally, deploying military domestically without Congressional approval, and launching military strikes without consulting Congress.

A resolution adopted by the Council outlined how these actions have impacted Boston residents. These include aggressive immigration enforcement, ending protections for immigrant populations, censorship attempts on local institutions, rollbacks of LGBTQIA+ protections, limits on gender-affirming care, obstacles to student loan forgiveness, and cuts to veterans' services.
The Council also noted that recent decisions by both Supreme Court and Congress have allowed these actions to continue. They pointed to similar resolutions from other cities like Philadelphia in their call for action.
Recognizing Boston residents' ongoing commitment to democracy through protests and rallies, the Council urged Massachusetts' Congressional delegation to push Congress to enforce the Constitution. They also called for a restoration of separation of powers and overturning unconstitutional acts while affirming that there is no king in America.
As Boston continues to honor its historic role in shaping American democracy, it is clear that its leaders are dedicated to upholding the principles of the Constitution and ensuring that checks and balances are maintained.
