~ During the recent Council meeting, the issue of maintaining adequate staffing for public safety and preventing police officers from being overextended was addressed. The Council unanimously passed a resolution in support of utilizing existing state law to allow qualified retired Boston Police officers to work paid police details.
The Boston Police Department has been facing ongoing staffing shortages, with a lower number of sworn officers than what is required by the Boston Municipal Code. This has raised concerns about mandatory overtime, stretched resources, and the burden placed on active-duty officers. Under Chapter 124 of the Acts of 2015, the Police Commissioner has the authority to appoint retired Boston Police officers as Special Police Officers for one-year terms to perform duties related to police detail work. This law also gives the Commissioner discretion in establishing qualifications, training requirements, medical standards, and departmental policies for these appointments.
