~ During the latest Council meeting, members of the Council have urged the City of Boston to take action and establish a dedicated crossing guard corps for Trotter Elementary School. This resolution, proposed by Councilor Culpepper, aims to ensure safe travel for students and families in the area.
The pressing need for this dedicated crossing guard corps comes as Boston is currently facing a shortage of crossing guards. This has resulted in limited support for school crossings, especially at high-traffic schools like Trotter Elementary. The resolution emphasizes the important role of the Boston Police Department in approving crossing guard locations and coordinating traffic safety. It calls for proactive coordination between all parties involved to ensure consistent coverage.

The Council also recognizes that Safe Routes To School initiatives are crucial in promoting student safety. These initiatives include infrastructure improvements, traffic calming measures, and adult supervision. However, it has been noted that the Roxbury Safe Routes To School Project does not currently have a plan to expand crossing guard coverage at Trotter Elementary.
To address this issue, the Council is calling for a corps of both paid personnel and trained community volunteers to be coordinated with the Boston Police Department and school community. This strategy aims to provide reliable supervision during arrival and dismissal times while also promoting community engagement and equitable access to safe school travel. The Council hopes that this initiative will strengthen safety measures in the area while also fostering a sense of community involvement.
