Boston: Council Supports Holders of Temporary Protective Status

Trending...
~ In 1990, the United States government established Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to provide foreign nationals with employment authorization and temporary protection from deportation if they are unable to safely return to their home countries and meet specific eligibility requirements. Currently, there are an estimated 610,630 individuals in the U.S. who hold TPS from 16 designated countries, with the majority coming from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti.

According to recent data, TPS holders contribute approximately $12.8 billion annually to the U.S. economy. This includes significant contributions to various industries such as healthcare, construction, education, and services. In Boston alone, TPS holders play critical roles in supporting the city's infrastructure and economy.

For many TPS holders in Boston and Massachusetts, the United States has been their home for over two decades. They have established themselves by owning homes and businesses, employing U.S. citizens, and raising children who were born in the country and are American citizens themselves.

However, there is a looming threat for these individuals as their TPS status may soon expire. This could result in the loss of valuable members of the Boston community and cause economic hardship for families. It could also disrupt long-established communities across the city.

In response to this potential crisis, the City Council has adopted a resolution urging the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Congress, and President of the United States to extend TPS for all eligible individuals and create a pathway to permanent residency for them and their families. This would allow them to continue residing safely in the United States and contribute to their communities without fear of deportation or separation from their loved ones.

The Council's resolution highlights the vital role that TPS holders play in our society and emphasizes the need for a compassionate solution that recognizes their contributions while also providing them with stability and security for their future in America.
