~ Just days before Memorial Day, the Council adopted a resolution in support of the "Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion (VSAFE) Act." This act aims to protect veterans from falling victim to scams and fraud, which often target military retirees and older veterans who may need assistance accessing resources.

According to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), last year alone, over 74,000 veterans and military retirees reported instances of fraud or identity theft. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for measures to be taken in order to protect our nation's heroes.

The VSAFE Act will establish the position of a Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion Officer within the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (V.A.). This officer will be responsible for preventing fraud and scams, as well as creating incident response plans at the V.A. Additionally, they will provide guidance on how to identify, report, and avoid fraudulent attempts targeting veterans, military families, caregivers, and survivors.

This bill has received support from DAV and is crucial in not only preventing scams but also ensuring that veterans receive all the benefits they are entitled to. With this act in place, our nation's heroes can rest assured that their sacrifices will not be exploited by scammers.
