BOSTON ~ Boston - On Thursday, June 27, 2024, Danza Organica presented their latest production, Âs Nupumukômun (We Still Dance), at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design's Tower Auditorium. The multimedia performance showcased the stories of the Aquinnah Wampanoag people through dance, music, and storytelling.
The free performance was a result of a years-long partnership between Danza Organica and nine intergenerational Aquinnah Wampanoag collaborators. It premiered in Martha's Vineyard in 2022 and has now made its way to Boston for its highly anticipated city debut.
Âs Nupumukômun explores the complexities of being Native in today's society by highlighting both traditional and contemporary stories of the Aquinnah Wampanoag people. The piece aims to shed light on the struggles and triumphs of this community while also celebrating their rich cultural heritage.
"We are excited to share our stories through this contemporary, multimedia experience," said NaDaizja Bolling, a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe. "Danza Organica has been an incredible partner throughout this collaboration, and we are grateful for their professionalism and thoughtfulness in bringing our stories to life."

The development of Âs Nupumukômun began six years ago during a residency at The Yard, an arts center on Martha's Vineyard that supports new works. This partnership has allowed for a deep exploration of the Aquinnah Wampanoag culture and history through dance.
"Colonization has attempted to erase Indigenous histories for centuries," said Mar Parilla, founder of Danza Organica. "Through this production, we aim to reclaim our joy and celebrate our resilience as a community."
Danza Organica is a contemporary dance theater company founded by Afro-Puerto Rican artist/choreographer Mar Parrilla in 2007. Their work centers around themes of equity, social justice, and decolonization. With dancers from Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Spain, the company brings a diverse range of experiences to their performances.
The event was made possible with support from The Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture, Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, Mayor's Office of New Urban Mechanics, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Doors opened at 6:30 p.m., and the 75-minute program was suitable for all ages. While the performance was free, reservations were recommended and could be made online. For more information about Danza Organica and their upcoming performances, visit their website at https://bit.ly/massartdo.
