Boston: Discover City Projects in Your Neighborhood

Trending...
~ Boston, MA - As residents take a stroll through their neighborhood, they may notice new developments such as a neighbor's garden, a new coffee shop, or even a sprouting sapling. However, one thing that may not be as easily noticeable is the City of Boston's ongoing efforts to make the city more resilient, green and family-friendly.

Through its capital budget, the City has been investing in various projects to improve the quality of places and spaces in Boston. These investments can be seen all around us, from berms and natural seawalls to prevent coastal flooding to newly built schools and major renovations that cater to the learning needs of all students.

In addition, the City has also made significant investments in public infrastructure such as renovated pools that offer a range of programs for all ages and abilities. Furthermore, major improvements have been made to the public right of way, making streets and sidewalks safer for everyone.

To keep residents informed about these ongoing projects and how they are impacting their neighborhoods, the City has launched the Citywide Project Tracker. This online tool was developed by Boston Digital Service and the Planning Advisory Council to provide easy access to information about nearly 200 projects that are either completed or underway.

According to city officials, this project tracker was created in response to residents' desire for more information on how the City is investing in their neighborhoods. In the past, this information was scattered across various department websites and not easily searchable by neighborhood.

To ensure that the project tracker met residents' needs, user research was conducted with both city staff and constituents. Through this process, it was determined that project pages needed to be consistent across all departments and should prominently display key information such as purpose, timeline, and status. Additionally, there was a need for information on how residents can get involved in these projects and share their thoughts for future developments.

The project tracker also features an index that allows users to search for projects based on type, neighborhood, and project phase. Furthermore, an interactive map is available for residents to view the location of these projects.

The City worked closely with its staff to design a new project page template and an interface for the searchable index. As a result, 180 projects were successfully migrated to the new format with the help of the Planning Advisory Council. Additionally, ten new projects have been added since this major migration effort.

Residents can filter city investments based on their specific interests, such as neighborhood, project type, and project phase. This allows them to stay informed about developments that are relevant to their community.

The Citywide Project Tracker not only provides information on ongoing projects but also connects residents to new parks, public art, and experiences in their neighborhood. It also serves as a platform for residents to find out about community meetings and opportunities to contribute to the planning process.

Looking ahead, city officials have stated that they will continue to improve the project tracker based on resident feedback. They are also planning to add affordable housing projects led by the Boston Housing Authority and Mayor's Office of Housing later this year.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Citywide Project Tracker and provide feedback through the feedback button at the bottom of the page. The City of Boston is committed to keeping its residents informed and engaged in its efforts to make Boston a better place for all.
