~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, along with the Age Strong Commission, the Biogen Foundation, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (ULEM), and Lyft, have announced the expansion of Healthy Rides, a free transportation initiative for older residents in Boston. This collaborative effort, with a total investment of $150,000, aims to tackle social isolation, improve access to medical care, and enhance the overall quality of life for older adults in the city.
The success of the initial pilot program launched in November 2024 has led to its expansion. The program provided over 1700 rides to more than 600 older adults during its four-month pilot period, demonstrating a strong demand and significant impact. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), social isolation and loneliness can have severe effects on an older adult's health and well-being. It is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. Research also shows that isolated older adults face longer hospital stays, higher readmission rates, and lower life expectancy compared to those with supportive social connections.
Mayor Wu expressed her gratitude towards all partners for their leadership and support in ensuring that Boston remains a home for everyone. She stated that every elder in Boston should have easy access to visit friends and family, attend social gatherings, and get to medical appointments. The success of the pilot program highlights the importance of providing these services and removing barriers for older residents to live healthy and independent lives.
