~ Boston, MA - Mayor Michelle Wu, along with public safety officials and representatives from First Night, gathered today to discuss the city's preparations for the upcoming New Year's Eve celebration. The annual event, which is free and family-friendly, will once again take place at City Hall Plaza and will feature a variety of performances, ice sculptures, fireworks, and more. As a partner of the event, the City is working closely with Boston Celebrations Inc. and Conventures Inc. to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
"First Night is a cherished tradition in our community that brings families and friends together to celebrate a fresh start," said Mayor Michelle Wu. "We are excited to welcome residents and visitors back to City Hall Plaza for another year of festivities. I urge everyone to keep safety in mind as we ring in the new year."
The 2025 First Night celebration will offer over 12 hours of free programming at City Hall Plaza and throughout Boston. Last year, the event moved from its usual location in Copley Square due to park reconstruction. While parts of Copley Square Park are set to reopen later in the winter and spring, this year's celebration will once again take place at City Hall Plaza. New additions to the event include indoor performances at Boston Public Market and CanalSide Food + Drink, as well as new acts on the main stage at City Hall Plaza. In honor of Massachusetts' 250th anniversary, there will also be special ice sculptures on display.

To ensure a safe environment for all attendees, the Boston Police Department will have a strong presence at First Night. They are reminding everyone not to consume alcohol or marijuana in public spaces or prohibited private spaces, not to fly drones during any First Night activities, dress appropriately for the weather, and report any suspicious activity.
"We want families participating in First Night celebrations as well as those celebrating in our neighborhoods to feel safe," said Commissioner Michael Cox of the Boston Police Department. "We are working closely with our public safety partners to make this a family-friendly and secure event for all. If you see something concerning, please report it to a nearby officer or call 911."
The evening's festivities will kick off with a parade from City Hall Plaza to the Boston Common at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Family Fireworks over Boston Common at 7:00 p.m. The night will end with the Midnight Fireworks over Boston Harbor presented by Meet Boston. More information about the programming for December 31st can be found on firstnightboston.org.
Dusty Rhodes, executive director of First Night Boston, expressed excitement for the 49th year of the event, stating, "We are proud to produce this event and keep it entirely free for all to enjoy. We are immensely grateful to the City of Boston and our event sponsors for their ongoing support."

The Boston Fire Department will also have additional personnel on duty and resources on hand during the fireworks shows and other outdoor activities. They remind everyone that private use of fireworks is prohibited in the city and urge people to leave it to the professionals.
"We want everyone to have a safe and happy new year," said Commissioner Paul Burke of the Boston Fire Department. "Please do not use fireworks on your own. As always, we are ready to respond to any emergency. If you need assistance, please call 911 or visit any firehouse."
Boston EMS will also be prepared for any medical emergencies that may arise during First Night celebrations. They will have additional personnel deployed throughout the city and urge everyone to take precautions while celebrating.
"Whether you are joining us at First Night in Boston or celebrating elsewhere, please take steps to ensure a safe New Year's Eve," said Chief of Department Jim Hooley of Boston EMS. "Dress appropriately for the weather, have a transportation plan, and look out for each other. Our personnel will be stationed throughout the city, so if you need emergency medical services, please call us. We are grateful for all those working through the holidays to keep our community safe."
Due to the festivities, there will be traffic and parking restrictions in Downtown Boston. Those planning to attend are encouraged to use public transportation instead of driving. The MBTA has announced that they will not be collecting fares after 8:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve and have updated holiday schedules available on their website.
