Boston: October is Italian-American Heritage Month

Trending...
National Italian ~ As the month of October approaches, the United States prepares to celebrate National Italian-American Heritage Month. This annual tribute, first recognized by Congress in 1989, honors the contributions of Italian-Americans to our nation and highlights the cultural impacts of this community.

The idea of designating October as Italian-American Heritage Month was originally proposed by the Massachusetts General Court and signed into law by Governor Argeo Paul Cellucci in 1998. This month holds special significance for thousands of Italian immigrants who have made their home in Boston neighborhoods since the 1860s. These immigrants hail from various regions such as Liguria, Campana, Abruzzo, Sicily, and Lazio, and have settled in areas like North End, East Boston, Brighton, Hyde Park, and South Boston.

The City of Boston has been greatly influenced by its Italian-American population. Many individuals of Italian descent have served selflessly in public office, including Thomas M. Menino - the longest-serving Mayor in Boston's history and grandson of Italian immigrants.

This month is an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture, food, art, and generational traditions that have been passed down by Italian-Americans. To mark this occasion on October 2nd 2024, the Council will raise the Italian flag over City Hall Plaza as a symbol of recognition for October as Italian-American Heritage Month.
