Boston: September is Kinship Awareness Month

Trending...
~ As September begins, the nation prepares to recognize and honor the important role of kinship caregivers during National Kinship Awareness Month. This annual observance, established in 2017, aims to raise awareness about kinship care and the vital support it provides for children in need.

Kinship care involves the care of children by grandparents, relatives, or close family friends when their parents or guardians are unable to do so. These individuals selflessly step forward to provide love, support, and guidance for children during times of family crisis. They create safe and nurturing environments for children and promote their well-being and positive development. By offering a sense of belonging and continuity during challenging times, kinship caregivers ensure that children maintain important family connections.

Research has shown that when children are able to experience kinship care, they have improved behavioral health and are less likely to experience trauma or instability. National Kinship Awareness Month seeks to honor and recognize the contributions of these caregivers while also raising awareness about the challenges they face.

In a recent resolution offered by Councilors Louijeune, Santana, and Mejia, it was stated that "promoting awareness of kinship care encourages communities to support these caregivers and ensure that children in kinship care continue to receive the resources and services they need to thrive." This week, the Council adopted this resolution, officially recognizing September as National Kinship Awareness Month. Through this action, they have affirmed their commitment to supporting kinship families and promoting the well-being of children in kinship care.

As we enter into this month-long observance, let us take a moment to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of kinship caregivers who play a crucial role in providing stability and love for children in need.
