Boston: A Step Toward Safer Streets for All

Trending...
~ As pedestrian safety continues to be a growing concern in the City of Boston, the Council has taken action to address the issue. Recent accidents have highlighted the need for greater shared responsibility and heightened awareness of surroundings in order to prevent further incidents.

In 2019, a tragic accident occurred at the intersection of Melcher and Summer Street in the Fort Point neighborhood. Two pedestrians were struck by a van while a phasing traffic signal was in operation. Sadly, one of the pedestrians did not survive their injuries.

A phasing traffic signal is a type of traffic light that changes in a set sequence, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to move in specific phases at different times. The Council believes that having both a right-turn green arrow for vehicles and a pedestrian walk signal at the same time can create dangerous situations. This places the expectation on vehicles to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, which may not always happen.

In response to these concerns, the Council has adopted a resolution this week supporting the replacement of concurrent phasing traffic signals throughout Boston. This change is expected to improve pedestrian safety and benefit the city as a whole by enhancing safety, sustainability, and quality of life for all residents.

The Council urges all residents to be mindful of their surroundings and work together towards creating safer streets for everyone. By taking these steps, Boston can become a more accessible and livable city for all its inhabitants.
