Friday, November 1, 2024 ~ The Boston Transportation Department has announced the completion of a new pedestrian plaza in the East Fens area. The plaza, named New Edgerly Plaza, aims to provide a space for people of all ages to relax, dine outdoors, and have fun.
According to Vineet Gupta, Director of Policy and Planning, the plaza was created by repurposing roadway space using paint and seating. This has resulted in an inviting public space that will simplify the traffic network and increase safety for pedestrians. Additionally, it will also provide easier access to the nearby Harry Ellis Dickson Park and serve as a venue for public events.
The idea for the pedestrian plaza was first proposed by local community organizations in 2021. It was tested through one-day closures for Fenway Porchfest over the course of three years. To make it a permanent fixture, the street was closed off to cars and a vibrant mural was painted on the ground. Tables and chairs were also placed in the space along with trees and plants in large planters. A public meeting is scheduled to take place after six months to discuss and evaluate the success of the plaza.
