~ As summer approaches and school comes to an end, many families in Massachusetts are facing the challenge of putting food on the table without the support of school meals. To address this issue, the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) has announced a new program called SUN Bucks, which will provide eligible families with a grocery card worth $120 per school-aged child.
According to DTA, most eligible families are automatically enrolled in SUN Bucks and do not need to submit an application. If a child receives SNAP benefits, DTA cash benefits, SSI with a relative caregiver, certain types of MassHealth, or is in foster care and attends a school that provides free school lunch, they are likely already enrolled in SUN Bucks. These families will receive their SUN Bucks card in the mail without having to take any additional steps.
In early May, DTA sent out text messages to confirm addresses for those who receive SNAP benefits and have not yet received their SUN Bucks card. If a family believes they are automatically eligible but has not received their card by June 30th, they can call the SUN Bucks hotline at 855-425-8770 to confirm their mailing address.

It is important to note that all families eligible for SUN Bucks will receive a new card this year, even if they are current recipients of SNAP or DTA benefits. These benefits will not be loaded onto existing SNAP or P-EBT cards.
For families who are not automatically enrolled but believe they may still be eligible for SUN Bucks, there is still an opportunity to apply. Families can apply if their child is between the ages of 6-16 and receives SNAP benefits, DTA cash benefits, SSI with a relative caregiver, certain types of MassHealth, or is in foster care – even if they do not attend a school that provides free school meals. Additionally, households that meet income limits for school meals and have children attending schools that provide free school lunch can also apply.
To apply, families can visit DTAConnect.com/SUNBucks or submit a paper application to DTA. The application is available in multiple languages and can also be obtained through the child's school.

Once families receive their SUN Bucks card, they can use it like a debit card at most grocery stores and farmers markets. Before using the card, they will need to set up a PIN by calling the number on the back of the card and providing their card number, case number, and the cardholder's date of birth. Benefits will start becoming available in July 2025 and must be used within 122 days of being deposited.
DTA reminds families to save their SUN Bucks card even after it is empty, as it can be used again if they qualify for the program next summer. They also urge families to check their school's eligibility for NSLP/SBP and ensure that DTA has their current mailing address to avoid any delays.
In an effort to spread awareness about SUN Bucks, DTA has created flyers in multiple languages and encourages those who know families with school-aged children who may qualify to share this information with them.
