~ Boston, MA - The City of Boston has announced that they will be conducting proactive maintenance on the Moakley Bridge, which connects Downtown Boston to the Seaport District. This regular maintenance is part of the city's efforts to ensure the safety and functionality of its bridges.
According to city officials, the bridge will be intermittently closed during the weekend of June 21, 2025. This closure is necessary for contractors to raise the structure with jacks and replace older bearings. Residents are advised to call 311 or email publicworks@boston.gov with any questions or concerns.
In response to frequently asked questions about the project, officials have provided more details about the nature and timeline of the work. The Moakley Bridge will be raised in order to replace deteriorated bearings on the structure. Once replaced, jacks will lower the beams back onto the new bearings.

The working hours for this project will be around-the-clock, with several periods of bridge closures during the weekend of June 21. Preparatory work will also be performed in the two weeks leading up to this weekend from under the bridge.
When asked why this work is being done now, city officials stated that their goal is to always keep bridges and other infrastructure in good repair. This project requires careful coordination to ensure safety and effectiveness, and after careful consideration, it was determined that this upcoming work window was the best time to complete these necessary repairs.
Residents living near the bridge may experience some noise from contractor equipment during this time. However, officials do not expect it to be particularly loud.
It should be noted that during construction, the bridge will not remain open for use. The intermittent closures are necessary for contractors to safely jack up and replace deteriorated bearings on the bridge.
The City of Boston urges residents to stay informed about this project and reach out with any questions or concerns they may have. With proactive maintenance efforts like these, they hope to keep their bridges and infrastructure in top condition for the safety and convenience of all residents.
