HAVERHILL, Mass. - BostonChron -- Bread & Roses Housing (BRH) proudly celebrated a significant milestone on September 12, 2023, with the successful acquisition of two vital properties, 20 Brown Court in North Andover and 38-40 Curtis St. in Haverhill, MA. These acquisitions mark a significant step towards the organization's mission of creating and preserving affordable homeownership through the Community Land Trust model.
20 Brown Court, a blighted property needing revitalization. 38-40 Curtis St. is a piece of barren land. BRH plans to construct duplex-style homes on these properties in the near future. This expansion is essential to address the area's growing demand for affordable housing.
Among those in attendance at the celebration were BRH Executive Director Annmary Connor, BRH staff Angelica Gil and Kady Phelps-El Mernissi, BRH Board Directors Gloria Abou-Haidar and Arlin Santiago, property contractors from Levis Industries, Inc., Joseph Levis and Joe Levis, Jr., Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini, Haverhill Community Development representatives Andrew Herlihy and Matthew Hennigan, VP, Commercial Loan Officer of Pentucket Bank, Jean McCann, and former Brown Court property owner Harold McPhee.

BRH understands that navigating the landscape of affordable housing development, particularly in finding reasonably priced land for expansion, presents challenges. However, the organization is pleased to announce that new construction is on the horizon, with construction expected to commence at the beginning of 2024, pending adequate funding.
BRH extends heartfelt gratitude to Harold McPhee, former owner of Brown Court, who sold the property significantly below market rate, making it possible for the organization to acquire the land. His generosity will have a lasting impact on the community. Thank you to the City of Haverhill, the Town of North Andover, and Pentucket Bank for making this possible.
For those looking to contribute to the cause and support BRH in its mission, donations can be made at www.brhousing.org.
