~ Boston's Animal Care and Control Director, Alexis Trzcinski, is reminding dog owners of the importance of licensing their pets. Not only is it a legal requirement, but it also helps ensure that lost dogs can be quickly returned to their owners.
Trzcinski urges all dog owners to do their part in keeping their furry companions safe by getting them licensed. As part of this year's licensing reminder, the city has revealed the most popular dog names and breeds in Boston for 2024.
According to data collected by Animal Care and Control, the top male dog name was once again Charlie, with 83 registered pups. For female dogs, Luna took the lead with 102 registrations. The 25th most popular name for male dogs was Otis with 24 registrations, while Piper came in at number 25 for female dogs with 38 registrations.
The data also sheds light on Boston's favorite dog breeds. The Labrador Retriever continues to be the city's most popular breed with a total of 1,671 registered dogs. This is followed by the Golden Retriever (749) and Chihuahua (421). Other top breeds include the German Shepherd (371) and Miniature Poodle (351).

It is mandatory for all dogs over six months old to be licensed annually in Boston. Owners must provide a copy of their dog's current rabies certificate and proof of spaying or neutering if applicable. The licensing fees are $15 for neutered or spayed pets and $30 for unaltered pets. However, service animals and residents aged 70 or older are exempt from these fees. Failure to license a pet can result in a $50 fine.
For more information on how to license your dog online, Animal Care and Control has provided an in-depth guide on their website. Additionally, the City of Boston will be hosting low-cost dog licensing and pet vaccine clinics every Saturday from March 4 to June 3 at seven BCYF community centers. Details, fees, and locations can be found on the city's website or by calling (617) 635-1800.
