Enhancing a Boston Landmark: Charlesbank and the Smith Family Pavilion at the Charles River Esplanade

Trending...
~ The Charles River Esplanade is set to undergo a major transformation with the construction of the Smith Family Pavilion, a new building that will provide a welcoming destination for visitors. The groundbreaking ceremony for this project, which is being spearheaded by the non-profit organization Esplanade Association, took place in May 2025.

Founded in 2001, the Esplanade Association's mission is to improve the quality of life on the Esplanade for all. This state-owned parkland, also known as Charlesbank and Storrow Memorial Embankment, is part of the larger Charles River Reservation. However, it has its own distinct identity and has only been in existence since the late 19th century when filling of Boston's Back Bay occurred.

The easternmost section of the Esplanade, known as Charlesbank, was built in the 1880s and 1890s on filled land north of Charles Street. In 1908, when the river was dammed to create a constant water level, the park was widened and a new strip of parkland was added along the southern edge of the river. In the 1930s, landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff further expanded and enhanced this area. This laid the foundation for what we know today as the Esplanade.

However, with construction of Storrow Drive in the early 1950s came additional filling to compensate for land taken by the roadway. As a result, an area that was once open to public swimming - known as Lee Pool Complex - became largely closed off to visitors in the 1990s.

But now, thanks to state legislation passed in summer 2022 and approved by Boston Landmarks Commission in 2024, this space will be revitalized through the Smith Family Pavilion project. Designed by Maryann Thompson Architects, this universally-accessible building will feature a staffed welcome desk, public bathrooms open year-round, a café with indoor and outdoor seating, classrooms, community meeting spaces, and a roof deck with stunning views of the Charles River.

The Esplanade Association is responsible for funding the project and managing the operation of Charlesbank for the next several decades. The new building will not only provide a variety of recreational, civic, artistic, educational, and cultural activities for visitors but also focus on environmental improvements to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable practices.

With the approval of site plans at the Charles River Esplanade, construction is set to begin soon. This project is a testament to the dedication of the Esplanade Association in fulfilling their mission of making life better on the Esplanade for all. The Smith Family Pavilion will undoubtedly become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, adding to the beauty and charm of this iconic parkland along the Charles River.
