~ Boston, MA - On Monday, December 2nd, the Rabb Hall at Boston Public Library will be buzzing with activity as the city hosts its annual Equity and Inclusion (E&I) Summit. This event aims to bring together current Academy participants, alumni, and city employees to strengthen connections, foster learning, and strategize on how to put equity into practice.

The Summit will feature a panel discussion on Equity in Practice, with prominent city leaders such as Chief Mariangely Solis Cervera, Chief Jose Massó, Chief Dillon, Brenda Hernandez, and Luis Frias sharing their insights on how they apply equity in their work. This panel is expected to provide valuable strategies for advancing equity across Boston.

The E&I Academy was launched as a pilot program last year with 44 participants committed to promoting equity in their work. In just its second year, the program has seen a significant increase in participation with 76 individuals successfully completing the learning series. This brings the total number of City of Boston staff committed to equity to an impressive 120 individuals.

The Summit will also include interactive breakout sessions focused on accessibility, conflict transformation, and sustaining equity work with joy and mindfulness. These sessions aim to equip attendees with practical tools for addressing systemic inequities.

One of the key highlights of the event will be a graduation ceremony for the newest E&I Ambassadors. This ceremony not only celebrates their achievements but also serves as an opportunity for building community among like-minded individuals.

According to Chief Mariangely Solis Cervera, "This initiative provides an opportunity for staff to understand the different ways that we can do better by our residents. People learn history and best practices that help inform their day-to-day operations in the job."

The E&I Summit is part of a broader learning series offered by the E&I Academy. These workshops cover various topics such as social determinants of health with a racial equity lens, LGBTQIA2S+ advancement, immigrant empowerment, disability awareness, and creating an age-friendly city. This series aims to equip city employees with the necessary tools to address systemic inequities and foster a culture of belonging.

The E&I Summit is a testament to Boston's ongoing commitment to promoting equity and inclusion. By building trust across differences and empowering city employees to lead with equity in their work, Boston is striving towards becoming a city for everyone.
