NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - BostonChron -- Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) has partnered with New Bedford Public Schools (NBPS) to provide meals for students. NBPS opened its new Culinary and Nutrition Center, also known as the Central Kitchen this year. The Central Kitchen provides nutritious meals for students across the city, including for GLCPS, Alma del Mar Public Charter School, and several other small, private schools.

The new 14.7 million dollar Culinary and Nutrition Center located at 453 North Street in New Bedford was completed last July and opened in time for the new school year. Along with providing meals for thousands of students, families are able to access the daily menus and information about allergens, calories, fats, and sodium for each food item.

"We are pleased to partner with New Bedford Public Schools on this exciting initiative," GLCPS Executive Director Stephen Furtado Jr. said. "They have done an excellent job of providing nutritious, tasty meals for students. We look forward to a long, successful partnership and hope this leads to other opportunities to collaborate."

GLCPS students have been generally pleased with the change, citing more extensive menu items and better quality meals overall.

Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006.
