International Widower's Week Announced by Widower's Support Network
In 2011, the United Nations established June 23rd as International Widows Day. By doing so, they hope to draw attention to the voices and experiences of widows and galvanize the unique support that they need.
Herb Knoll, Widower's Support Network Founder Makes Announcement
"But what about the world's widowed men?" asks Widower's Support Network (WSN) Founder Herb Knoll.
"For fifteen years, I have watched the world's widowed men suffer silently without fanfare, adequate support, or understanding. Many widowers feel abandoned, lost, and, above all, lonely. The time has come for widowed men to emerge from the shadows," said Herb Knoll, Founder of the Widower's Support Network, LLC. "To this end, WSN proudly announces the creation of International Widower's Week (IWW), celebrated annually for seven days during the first full week of March, said Knoll.

In announcing the long overdue annual commemoration, Knoll added, "One out of every five men will be widowed, many of them twice. Their challenges are too numerous to list here, but they are significant and frequently life-threatening. By setting aside the first full week of March, we hope to draw attention to the many needs of widowers and their families."
Knoll continued on saying, "During the coming years, we will build upon today's announcement, adding positive action items for those wishing to implement them. WSN asks all those who share an interest in helping men in grief to please share this proclamation with their friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and houses of worship. Share your grief journey with those who will listen, hopefully causing them to be supportive of widowers everywhere."
Knoll provided an aside, "Having no reason to select another date, I elected the first full week of March to celebrate International Widower's Week, as it was on March 7th, 2008, I lost my bride, Michelle R. Knoll. I have always felt widowers should celebrate their wife's life by living theirs."
