CHANHASSEN, Minn., Dec. 2, 2024 ~ In a move to support improved youth nutrition, the Life Time Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization affiliated with Life Time (NYSE: LTH), has announced significant enhancements to their digital nutrition software, Green Onion. This complimentary tool, first launched in 2023, is designed to assist school districts, purchasing cooperatives, and food manufacturers in analyzing their K-12 food products at the individual ingredient level. By doing so, it allows them to easily identify and replace unhealthy ingredients with more nutritious alternatives, resulting in positive and sustainable changes in school meals.
Green Onion stands out from other nutrition software as it goes beyond simply providing information from the Nutrition Facts label. It also flags ingredients of concern listed in the Ingredient Guide for Better School Food Purchasing. This guide is a science-based resource created by school nutrition professionals in partnership with the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The digital tool has been updated with a streamlined and user-friendly layout, thanks to a collaboration with the Eliassen Group. Users can now track their progress towards eliminating unwanted ingredients and those that have the potential to be overused. These are often found in foods of lower nutritional quality or indicate that a food is highly processed. Additionally, schools can receive support from a registered dietitian from the Life Time Foundation to help them get started.

Anneliese Tanner, Executive Director of Food and Nutrition Services at Boston Public Schools, praised Green Onion as an invaluable resource that goes above and beyond anything else available. She emphasized its potential impact on improving products that are served frequently in schools such as tortillas, bread products, hamburgers, pickles, and more. With nearly two million meals being served daily or weekly in her district alone, making positive changes to these items can have an exponential effect on student health.
One of the key features of Green Onion is its ability to receive real-time product data directly from K-12 food suppliers through 1WorldSync, the largest Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN). This ensures that the information available is always up-to-date and reliable. As more and more manufacturers upload their ingredients, the potential for positive change will only continue to grow.
