BOSTON, July 16, 2025 ~ Renowned author Thomas Haley has recently released his highly anticipated historical fiction novel, "The Far Corner of the Field," which takes readers on a journey through the tumultuous times of the American Revolution. The book's publication coincides with the 250th anniversary of the early stages of the War of Independence and is now available on Amazon, with plans for distribution in select independent bookstores.
Haley, known for his meticulous research and attention to detail, assures readers that while the novel is a work of fiction, it remains historically accurate. "My approach to writing is to present a 'big story' through historical events and a 'little story' through a fictional plot," he explains.
"The Far Corner of the Field" follows two central characters, Gideon Spencer and Thatcher Canby, as they navigate their way through the chaos and violence of war. Spencer, a Sergeant in the British Army, is wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill and left behind in Boston as the British evacuate. Meanwhile, Canby sets out on his own journey to rebuild his uncle's gristmill in what is now Vermont.

As both characters become entangled in the ongoing war, readers are taken on a gripping adventure through pivotal battles such as Hubbardton and Bennington. These battles were not only significant in shaping America's history but also had real-life last-minute rescues that changed their outcomes. Through Spencer and Canby's eyes, readers will experience first-hand the sights, sounds, and drama of this crucial time period.
Haley also sheds light on lesser-known events during this era that are often overlooked. For example, he includes details about clashes during the Battle of Bunker Hill that occurred on Mystic Beach and highlights General Knox's daring mid-winter crossing of Connecticut River with tons of ammunition and artillery at Springfield.
"The Far Corner of the Field" is just the first installment in a series of three books. The first book covers the end of the French and Indian War to just before the Battle of Saratoga. The subsequent books will delve into events that took place from late 1777 to 1779 and from 1780 to 1783, respectively.
Readers can now immerse themselves in this captivating tale of love, war, and resilience by purchasing "The Far Corner of the Field" on Amazon or at select independent bookstores.
