Local North Shore Women Attended the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus Gala

Jamie Zahlaway Belsito of Topsfield and Dawne Shand of Newburyport attended the first annual Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus Gala event held at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston.

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - BostonChron -- This year the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus combined the Abigail Adams award and the Good Guy Awards into one stunning evening at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston.  The Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus is a nonpartisan organization committed to increasing the number of women elected to public office and appointed to public policy positions. Dawne Shand is the Chair of the Greater Newburyport Chapter of the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus.  Since 2017, she has led the initiative to get more women elected to office, an effort that culminated in October 2018 with the official launch of the Greater Newburyport Committee of the MWPC, "an organization with MWPC's history allows us to be part of a rich legacy. From there, we are tackling with new vigor the astonishing disparity in women's representation at every level of governance in this state. The strength of this organization lies in having a shared purpose that forms a bridge between communities."

Jamie Zahlaway Belsito is a Democratic Congressional Candidate for the 6th district, "From my red kitchen table in Topsfield, I successfully led the effort to change maternal health care in this state and in this nation. I realized that no one was advocating Congress on maternal health issues, an issue I had been personally affected by, so I began leading the National Coalition for Maternal Mental Health's work on Capitol Hill. We launched the first Maternal Mental Health Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. I found over 100 co-sponsors in the House and Senate for the maternal mental health bill, which was signed into law on December 13, 2016 as a part of the 21st Century Cures Act.  We need leaders who aren't afraid of speaking up, and use their own challenges to make a difference", said Belsito. "Female legislators are making a difference, from the local level to federal offices by addressing issues that have never had exposure, but have long affected the health and wellness of our communities. It's time we get a representative in office who wants to work and bring results home to their district, because they want the job and love the people of this district."
