Mayor Michelle Wu Reappoints Vice Chair Michael O'Neill to the Boston School Committee

~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the reappointment of Michael O'Neill as Vice Chair of the Boston School Committee for another four-year term, effective January 6, 2024. The Boston School Committee is the governing body of Boston Public Schools.

Mayor Wu expressed her gratitude for O'Neill's dedication to the school communities and the city, stating that his knowledge, experience, and vision have helped shape BPS towards its fullest potential. She also thanked Chair Will Thomas and the Nominating Panel for their work in identifying strong candidates and expressed her appreciation to all the finalists for their commitment to public schools. Mayor Wu looks forward to working with each of them in the years ahead.

In response to his reappointment, Vice Chair O'Neill humbly stated that he is honored to continue this important work and is grateful that Mayor Wu has asked him to serve again. He acknowledged that BPS faces significant challenges but remains energized and eager to work with his fellow members and Superintendent Mary Skipper to make a difference for students.

Superintendent Skipper also praised O'Neill's contributions over the past 16 years as a member of the Boston School Committee. As a graduate of BPS and a leader in the community, she emphasized that this work is personal for O'Neill. She described him as one of the greatest champions for schools and students, who deeply cares about their success because he knows it is crucial for our future.

The responsibilities of the School Committee include defining BPS's vision, mission, and goals; establishing and monitoring the annual operating budget; hiring, managing, and evaluating the Superintendent; and setting and reviewing district policies and practices to support student achievement.

Since 2020, O'Neill has served as Vice Chair of the Boston School Committee where he has played a crucial role in improving leadership and governance within the district. His efforts have led to significant improvements in urban education not only locally but also nationally. O'Neill served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Council of Great City Schools, a coalition of the nation's 76 largest city school districts, from 2020-2021. He continues to represent BPS on the Board of Directors alongside Superintendent Skipper.

O'Neill is a lifelong resident of Boston and a graduate of BPS. He has over 25 years of experience in top financial services firms in the city and currently serves as Executive Vice President at Zozimus Agency. O'Neill previously served as Chair of the Boston School Committee from 2013-2017 and also chaired the Private Industry Council's Youth Council, overseeing all federal Workforce Investment Act funding for youth initiatives.

He holds degrees from Boston Latin School, Boston College, Babson College, the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, and has completed the Royal Bank of Scotland/Harvard Business School Executive Leadership Program.

In November, Mayor Wu announced a call for applications to the Boston School Committee. More information about the committee can be found on their website.
