Mayor Wu Announces Call for Boston’s Next Poet Laureate

Tuesday, August 27, 2024 ~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture have announced that the city is currently seeking applications and nominations for its next Poet Laureate. This prestigious position, established in 2008, has been a vital part of Boston's creative community, inviting residents to explore the transformative world of literary arts. The current Poet Laureate, Porsha Olayiwola, will be stepping down from her role to pursue other endeavors such as teaching at Emerson College and opening a bookstore in Fields Corner.

Mayor Wu expressed her excitement for this opportunity, stating that "the Poet Laureate is a very important role in our artistic community and beyond." She encourages all residents with a passion for poetry to apply and looks forward to seeing how the next Poet Laureate will use their talents to serve the city.

Kara Elliott-Ortega, Chief of Arts and Culture, emphasized the importance of this role in creating spaces for people to connect with their creativity. She expressed gratitude towards Porsha Olayiwola for using her gifts to showcase the beauty and complexity of Boston through poetry.

Since its inception, the position has been held by three individuals: Sam Cornish, Danielle Legros Georges, and currently Porsha Olayiwola. Olayiwola will be concluding her tenure with a workshop series this fall in collaboration with the Boston Public Library.

Olayiwola shared her experience as Poet Laureate, calling it "one of the greatest dreams" of her work. She feels honored to have become a part of Boston's rich literary tradition and hopes that she has helped propel the city's literary scene forward.

The Poet Laureate is a ceremonial appointment with a four-year term. Some of the key responsibilities include presenting works at civic events, developing public programming, enhancing poetry programs in Boston Public Schools and Libraries, and acting as a resource for the city during National Poetry Month.

To be considered for the role, applicants must be at least 21 years old, a current resident of Boston for at least two years, and actively involved in professional poetry that reflects the vibrancy of the city.

A Selection Panel consisting of literary professionals will evaluate all entries and conduct interviews with final candidates. The new Poet Laureate will be announced in January 2025 and will serve from July 1, 2025 to June 31, 2029.

Interested candidates can attend an information session on September 6 or September 12 to learn more about the position. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2024 at 5 pm. Applications can be submitted online or by mail.
