NKF Awards Indiana Registered Dietitian with Kopple Award

NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2025 ~ The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has announced that Registered Dietitian, Brandon Kistler, PhD, RD, will be the recipient of the prestigious Joel D. Kopple Distinguished Lecture Award in 2025.

This annual award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of renal nutrition. Dr. Kistler is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University and co-directs the Clinical and Translational Nutrition Research Lab.

Dr. Kistler's lecture, titled "Controversies in the Management of Protein Energy Wasting," will take place on Friday, April 11 at 8:45am – 9:45am. He expressed his gratitude for receiving this award named after Dr. Kopple, a renowned figure in advancing renal nutrition throughout his career.

"I am very honored to receive an award named after Dr. Kopple, who has done so much to advance renal nutrition in his incredible career," said Dr. Kistler. "Winning this award is a testament to the generous, talented, and supportive kidney community I have been fortunate enough to work with throughout my career."

Dr. Kistler's research focuses on utilizing lifestyle interventions such as diet and exercise to improve the quality of life and outcomes for individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). His work is currently funded by organizations including the National Kidney Foundation.

According to NKF President Dr. Kirk Campbell, lifestyle and proper nutrition play a crucial role in preventing and treating kidney disease. He also acknowledged Dr. Kistler's contributions to both NKF and countless patients and families through his research.

Dr. Kistler received his PhD from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he held a pre-doctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association. He has also held various volunteer positions including co-editor of the Renal Nutrition Forum and serving on editorial boards for the Journal of Renal Nutrition.

Expressing his gratitude for NKF's support, Dr. Kistler stated, "I use NKF resources nearly every day from the KDOQI guidelines and perspectives, timely continuing education and resources, and even research funding for projects in our lab. As a researcher, I am constantly motivated by how much there is to learn and inspired by how the kidney community comes together to improve patient care."

Dr. Kistler will receive the Joel D. Kopple Distinguished Lecture Award at the NKF 2025 Spring Clinical Meetings in Boston from April 9-13. This annual conference brings together nephrologists and healthcare professionals from across the country to learn about the latest developments in nephrology practice, network with colleagues, and present their research findings.

In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 35 million adults have kidney disease (CKD), with approximately 90% unaware of their condition. Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and family history.
