WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2024 ~ United Airlines Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) across the country gathered today for their second nationwide rally, demanding a contract that meets their needs and recognizes their crucial role in the airline's success. The Teamsters, who represent 10,000 technicians at United, are calling for improved wages, higher safety standards, and more comprehensive health care coverage.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien emphasized the importance of these technicians to United's operations, stating that "United Airlines only runs because of the hard work and professionalism of Teamsters technicians." He also urged the company to "respect the Teamsters" and deliver a contract that reflects their contributions.
According to Teamsters Airline Division Director Chris Griswold, United's slow progress in negotiations is causing concern among technicians. "There's already a shortage of qualified AMTs in the industry," he said, "but the problem is growing at United as technicians leave for better pay and benefits elsewhere." Griswold called on the company to stop dragging its feet and give employees the industry-leading contract they deserve.

The rallies took place at airports in Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Dulles, Va.; Denver; Houston; Los Angeles; Phoenix; San Francisco; and Seattle. This follows bargaining with United earlier this week in Denver where a tentative agreement was reached on one provision regarding union rights in investigatory meetings. Negotiations will continue later this month in Chicago.
Jimmy Sligar, a United technician from Houston Intercontinental Airport and member of Teamsters Local 19, expressed his determination to fight for a fair contract. "It is an honor to stand with my fellow United Airlines Teamsters," he said. "We will not stop until we win the strong contract that we have rightfully earned."
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has been representing hardworking individuals since 1903 and currently represents 1.3 million people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
