LOS ANGELES, Feb. 27, 2024 ~ Ember LifeSciences, a leading company in the pharmaceutical cold chain industry, has joined forces with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to improve the efficiency of blood sample shipping processes for upcoming sporting events. This partnership will include the highly anticipated 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
At the heart of this collaboration is Ember LifeSciences' revolutionary product, the Ember Cube. This innovative technology focuses on self-contained and self-monitoring shipping systems for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and lab specimens. The Ember Cube is the first of its kind in the market, providing a fully integrated solution to common challenges in cold chain shipping. Its patented design addresses issues related to tracking and maintaining optimal temperatures during transport, ensuring secure delivery and preserved efficacy of medicines and specimens.
The Ember Cube has already made a significant impact in the sports world, having been used by USADA at several prestigious events last year. These include the Boston and New York Marathons with Olympic and Paralympic athletes, as well as the Ironman World Championship in Kona. In November, it was also utilized by the Professional Fighters League for a fight, making it the first MMA promotion to use this technology.

During these events, hundreds of blood samples from elite athletes were safely transported in Ember Cubes to drug testing labs across the United States. With Ember's cloud-based dashboard, USADA was able to monitor real-time location, ambient temperature, and payload temperature of each Cube during transit. This ensured that the blood samples remained at optimal temperatures throughout their journey while maintaining chain of custody.
Aside from addressing shipment delays, USADA also found that using the Ember Cube was a cost-effective solution due to its reusability and advanced features such as self-refrigeration capabilities for convenient storage of collected blood samples before and during transport. The integrated temperature monitoring also eliminated the need for a standalone temperature logger, making the process more efficient, simple, and reliable.
John Bobo, Chief Operating and Innovation Officer of USADA, emphasized the importance of preserving the integrity of athletes' blood samples in maintaining a fair and level playing field. He stated, "With the Ember Cube, we've deployed the most comprehensive and sustainable solution for ensuring the integrity and reliability of vital shipments from in-competition collections."
