A children's picture book celebrates Shetland wool, Fair Isle Knitting, and the care that goes into a handmade gift.
PROVINCETOWN, Mass. - BostonChron -- Provincetown author and knitter Darren Showers has published Luna's Gift of Yarn, a children's picture book that begins with a question young readers might ask about their favorite sweater. Where did the yarn come from? Born under a full moon in the Shetland Islands, Luna spends her first days running and playing on grassy hills. When her fleece grows thick, Freya, the shepherd's daughter, gently shears her. Luna's wool is washed, dyed and spun into yarn. Granny Effie then knits it into a Fair Isle sweater and hat for her grandson Fergus. Some of Luna's yarn even crosses the sea and finds its way to a little yarn shop. Showers drew inspiration from his own knitting, including a Shetland shawl that grew large enough to cover his queen-size bed. He dedicated the book to the people who care for sheep and turn fleece into yarn, and to the knitters and crocheters who make something with it. Luna's Gift of Yarn is a read=aloud for families who want to share where wool comes from and how many hands help turn it into something we wear. For anyone who has ever made a gift one stitch at a time, Fergus's first time wearing his sweater may feel familiar. https://a.co/d/0bhwJq3r
