~ Boston's Open Newbury: Holiday Stroll will return on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2026, with Newbury Street closed to cars between Berkeley Street and Massachusetts Avenue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Mayor Michelle Wu announced the event, which the city launched in 2024 to celebrate the holidays and encourage winter shopping in the Back Bay. The city said the nine Open Newbury events held this year activated more than 100 businesses and drew close to 100,000 participants.
The city is encouraging businesses along Newbury Street to offer family-friendly activities, pop-up parklets, brand activations and other programming. If the weather is inclement, the stroll will be rescheduled for Dec. 13.
Parking restrictions will take effect on Newbury Street and certain cross streets beginning at 6 a.m., with signs posted to notify drivers. The intersections of Fairfield, Gloucester and Hereford streets will be closed to cars. Other intersections will remain open for public safety access and general traffic flow, the city said.

"The beauty of the holidays comes from gathering with friends and family, and through Open Newbury, we are creating another opportunity for everyone to come together, visit local businesses, and stroll along this historic street," Wu said.
Chris Osgood, interim chief of streets, called the event a "beloved annual tradition" and encouraged people to support local businesses.
City Councilor Sharon Durkan said the stroll would return for a third year and offer residents and visitors a chance to gather and explore the Back Bay. Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association, said the event could bring visitors to the district's Victorian shopping corridor and encouraged people to shop and dine in the neighborhood.
